I don't know about if omap 3D acceleration can be used for games but I image it could be possible.
And a fancy gui for mer is a good reason for me. I played around with mers new gui using sw rendering. It's slow right now but I'm really excited about an accelerated version.
BTW, would hardware acceleration benefit things like playing movies? I know it is 2D, but if media player could do it using HW-accelerated GL... At least on PC VLC can use GL for output

I would hope it could lead to
* fast scrolling of big web pages
* fast task/page switching
* game acceleration
* offloading some video decoder processing, in particular scaling
* offloading 2D overlays for alpha blending

how cool it would be to have Gallium 3D on N8x0 with OpenCL state tracker
N900 has different from n810 processor.
To run maemo 5 on n810 needs to recompile all from sources.
Because of some part of maemo 5 is closed only Nokia developers can do this. Also needs to port n810 hardware drivers to new maemo 5 kernel.
If you have deep knowledge of OMAP2 / N8x0 kernel specifics, come and prod me on IRC and you can help out.
Is current progress and pending issues documented somewhere (wiki page etc)? What kernel version you use with those drivers, diablo 2.6.21?
I wonder how it is hooked into display updates, N8x0 lcd controller uses partial and manual display updates to minimize memory traffic, does MBX driver know which part of its framebuffer changed or is fullscreen update the only sane way?
If there are any issues with mbx and omapfb/rfbi/blizzard driver integration I would definitely want to have a look at it and help as much as I can (which may be not much as I am quite slow nowadays). If you feel I would not slow you down let me know (pm, e-mail, link to current status).
If it is possible to make the kernel work-in-progress part public then please do. Quietly sitting on the sources is not ideal.

How important the closed parts are?
If I understand it right, the n8x0 drivers will be ported to the latest mainline kernel thanks to the fine work of the MER developers.

I haven't n900. On maemo 4 most packages from
catalogue.tableteer.nokia.com aren't open software.
