This may sound like a dumb question but I just cannot find out how to close books I once opened in FBReader. The list of books in the small drop down list (just right of the library icon) is growing with each book I'm reading. I want to remove finished book from this drop down list. How can I do that?

i think that list is for recently opened books

you can set the number of books that show up in the "recent" list in preferences.

Thank you for the hint. But I can't find such a preferences setting...

you're welcome. go to menu, preferences, library.
