ok, I just tried out the Maeps app, and it seems to be a much better engine, much quicker, much easier to read than that awful Maps app that comes with the phone, but it can't locate points of interest right now or route directions..

I was wondering if there were any plans to update this, or if anyone in the community is capable of forking the project and turning it into a great equivalent to the offocial google maps app the the iPhone and Android have?

written/mapped route directions are there, do you rather mean voice guided turnbyturn navigation? this would need much more efforts and way better support from google.
about POI: local search (bottom left of maeMaps) gives quite a lot of results - what are your needs?

hmm, are we talking about the same app? http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/maep/

I can't find any search feature or routing feature in this app anywhere?

I can't stand the Maps app that came with the phone because it is super laggy.. among other things..

I have a modified python script (http://mehere.glenmurphy.com/) which I use on my Laptop using either the web google maps of google earth. I want to use this on my n900 as I would be able to search for poi or get directions.

This uses the data from onboard gps data from gpsd or mini-gpsd referenced via /dev/ttyUSB0 or /dev/ttyS1. the script then plugs this into google maps api via a dynamic kml file.

I was looking to port but have been unsuccessful in locating the correct device output for the GPS.

any help much appreciated.
