In this post i just want to share with you my point of view about how N800 improves the internet tablet experience coming from 770.
-Device quality and content in the box
First of all i want to speak about the device quality and content in the box.
With your N800 youīll get a standard battery, the same that came with 770, a 128Mb miniSD card with the SD adapter,Stereo Headset with built-in mic for the Voip applications, USB cable, pouch, extra stylus and quick start guide.
The Sterero headset with mic is a great idea from Nokia, and should make really more pleasant the use of Voip services. You can have your N800 in your pocket and free your hands while you talk with friends and family using the headset.
Speaking about the device, the new look is really appealing for me combining two colors grey and black. The zoom , and on/off buttons are bigger and more comfortable in the 770. I guess they have reduce the size of this buttons by design reasons. And the 3 frontal buttons of the 770 (back, apps and home) are now combined to look like just one button.Nokia has considered again that is more important the design than the comfort of use.
Let me remark you the addition of 2 stereo loudspeakers, thatīs great for me because iīm a hardcore internet radio and podcast user. The sound quality is pretty good if you consider its size, and they really do a good job.
770 had just one RSMMC card slot, N800 uses now SD cards or miniSD with adapter but it has 2 card slots , one internal and the other external in the same position that 770 had the card slot.
N800 has now a stand at the back of the device that you can fold and unfold when you need it with two different positions. This is really more useful than the additional stand that we had with 770 so easy to lose.
N800 has now a built-in web cam that pops up when you press over it. It can also rotate 180 degrees.
Finally, The Stylus is completely different, thicker and better, itīs not just pure plastic like the 770 one.
-Start up
Itīs now time to start up the N800. The first youīll notice is a shorter start up time. N800 uses a more powerful processor that reduces start up times and improves performance working with applications. The N800 Display is the same used with 770, High-resolution touch screen display (800 x 480 pixels) with up to 65,536 colours, but it looks better.
Desktop design conserves the same layout, with shortcuts to Opera 8 web browser,Contacts and Applications. Color Theme is the only thing that has changed.
With N800 you have the same standard apps:
Opera 8 Internet web browser
EMail Client
GTalk Instant Messaging
internet Radio
Audio/Video Media Player
RSS Feed Reader
PDF Wiever
The only remarkable addition is the internet calling with video, that iīll talk about later.
Opera 8 browser now supports Flash 7, so YouTube videos can be watched at your device. Nowadays the frame rate is a bit low with the original firmware but you can update the firmware with the last version at the Nokia web page and video frame rate should improve.
-Internet Calling with video
N800 integrates now internet calling with video. You can video-call any other N800 user or PC users. In the case of PC users, they must download a Nokia application that enables the communication.
Internet Video Calling is really and interesting feature if we consider the prices of conventional videocall for 3G phones in some european countries or the lack of 3G infrastructure in others.
A really cheap alternative to videocall your family or friends from every place in the world with a hotspot, like the hotel during your vacations, an airport, restaurant ...
Internet messaging is also present, with google talk you can chat in the same way that you did with 770. And of course you can talk with your GTalk contacts. When you need to write a message the virtual keyboard do a better job with N800.
Gizmo has a new version of its application that you can download for your N800. With Gizmo you are not limited to communicate with PC or N800 users you can call conventional or mobile phone users expanding the possibilities.
Nokia has promised a version of Skype for N800 coming this fall, so N800 give us a wide range of communication alternatives.
In conclusion, N800 is an interesting step forward from 770 that makes the internet tablet experience more enjoyable.
