I will not use Chrome OS as I already have a hard enough time with my phone life being "in the cloud".

I can't stand the thought of my entire desktop being "in the cloud".

But in any case.. I think it was an idiotic move for Google to release a second OS, regardless of their intended "vision" for it.

Google, almost more than any other company, has a severe case of ADD. They release new innovations, focus on it for a while, get bored and do something else. They needed to focus on android and make it huge. If android had swarmed the netbook market you've got the same apps on your phone, on your computer. It literally merges the gap like Maemo does for us linux geeks.

And.. it'll entice even MORE developers.. since they'll come write for the netbook.. and then all the cell phones get immediate new software written by the netbook guys.

But.....no. Oh well.. such is google.

Ha ha, ha ha, ha. Please think that twice again. Try to run OpenOffice on your N810 if you don't see why I'm laughing at the though of that.

Yeah.. it does run, in Easy Debian. In fact i've used it.

It may not be the fastest in the world.. but it's also neither optimized for maemo.

I personally don't see why it's so funny.. but whatever. As long as the hardware is good enough to run the app, it'll work.

I am of the generation that remembers the days when cars from different regions of the world were generally considered to have distinctly different characteristics

Japanese: cheap and reliable, poor ergonomics and design.

European: highly engineered and ergonomic, with harmonious performance characteristics and the occasional achilles heel.

American: gas guzzling, poorly fit, low performance despite big engines, atrocious handling, grade-school styling.

Detroit sold millions of these dodos due in great part to US hyperpatriotism. I can't help but seeing the phone market as an echo of the auto-maker past.

Yes, I know it runs. It runs faster than what any interpreted with a similar feature set could, and even then it's _slow_. And horribly crampled.

You could run ALL the apps made for Ubuntu in your tablet NOW, there's a reason we don't do that (well, at least most of us).

So yes, I Iaugh at the idea that bytecode is going to help porting apps from a 10'' netbook to a 4'' phone. For that you need serious innovation at the GUI toolkit level, not any interpreted code that the only thing it does is slow down development of serious apps while you setup the Dalvik shim for your mostly NDK app. I have to wonder if they really didn't learn anything from the Palm days!

And fwiw, a x86 android netbook doesn't count as x86 phone.

Hey Arnim,

Are you referring to the mass-purchase of certain handsets in the market, or the over-exaggeration of differences between these handsets, or both, or something else entirely?

Interestingly, performance aside, html layouts seem to handle this pretty well, and alternate css stylesheets can help to improve layouts given extreme differences in displays.

Does this make chromeOS more enticing?

No. Nothing will make ChromeOS enticing.

@Crashdamage,
I wish I could say the same, but the idea of a thin-tablet (thin as it thin-client) is a very appealing proposition. I'd buy one personally if the battery life was great, the overall package was thin-and-light, and the price was low. I spend enough time reading on the net to justify it.

Interestingly, I expected the N810 to be my around-the-house net device, but the screen was way too small to be taken seriously (I'm convinced that it messed up my vision). I suspect any smartphone to have the same problem.

I'm very interested to see what becomes of the 'google slate'.

In other news...

Woah, the N1 is one good looking piece of hardware!
