Love my 770, but let's be honest...

there really isn't enough memory on board!

is it even feasible that Nokia can offer a memory upgrade in the future?

or has anyone cracked this puppy open to see if it's upgradeable ourselves??

why does Nokia tease us like this...

I wondered if it might be possible (now or in the future) to mkswap on a partition on the removable media card...

I don't know how fast this memory is, and I wonder if constant writing on flash(card) media would significantly reduce it's lifespan...

Using your flash card for swap is likely to shorten its lifespan significantly. I have no idea how long it may work; somebody will have to test and see how long it takes for their RS-MMC card to die.

The initial question was upgrading the memory. That is unlikely. The FCC pictures I've seen show only BGA mounted chips, and those are very difficult to desolder, even with specialized equipment.

So, while it is _possible_, it's unlikely. I'd love 128MB or 256MB on my 770 as well, but I don't think it'll happen.

But as a reality check, swap file won't be writing all the time. VM pages will not be flushed lifo. So, if we hypothetically consider that they are swapped one a minute, you'll get a quite good run for your money with a MMC that supports million writes. Now, if Nokia (or someone) would make swap partition such that it is chosen randomly from the mmc at boot time, that would pretty much negate the problem on a 1 gig mmc altogether. Just my two cents worth.

ah yea

thats why i got mine at compusa with the 2 year waranty

you can bring it back anytime with in 2 years and get its full purchase price towards a newer model

so when ever nokia comes out with their model that has 2 gigs of ram i just pay the difference!

Perhaps this is comparing apples to oranges, but I have a Psion 5MX
with only 16MB RAM and 32MB flash. I can run every app that comes with it and still not run out of RAM! The reason is that the applications themselves are very small and are optimized to run on a small machine.

Eventually there will be alternatives available for all the apps that come with the 770. Once you have a web browser that only consumes and few MB of RAM and doesn't leak memory, living with 64 megs will be just fine.
