My problem seemed to be caused by my recent install of the new firefox beta release. Just uninstalled it and the backlighting of the keyboard is working again.

I notice the problem too on the N900. I have my brightness turned all the way down in order to save battery however when I go from a dimmer environment into a brighter light the screen brightens way past the set value. It is great that the n900 light sensor does its job however its frustrating that my setting seems to be ignored. It also causes the screen to dim and brighten frequently in cases where its not required.

Anyone find a way to disable this behavior but keep brightness yet?
