I have installed and have booted up and running Mer 0.17testing4 on my Nokia N900.

Thanks! Very nice job!

One thing that should be mentioned here is that (apparently) this can be done without reflashing or wiping your main N900 operating system! That should get a few people testing it!

There's two prompts, first asks you for the date, the second for the time (IIRC). Is that what you are talking about? If so, just hit "OK" button. That may seem like a simple answer, but it's what I do. Or perhaps you need to explain more fully what your problem is. I'm just putting whatever time right now too...

If you hit this and a few lines about ipv6ish stuff, it's cuz you didn't copy over the proprietary /lib/firmware/* to Mer. Gah, nonfree.

This looks like a great option for the future, but it is a bit too early for me to try. They need at least to have phone call support first, then I will take it for a whirl.
