Well... many things, starting with the fact that it has not been my idea.

Reading where?
Threads on this site have pointed out that Maemo is more efficient than Android. Android has to work on multiple chipsets, so the code available in the SDK is at a higher (less cpu efficient) level. "Simple" things like video codecs and access to the hardware audio EQ are not practical as a result.

Still, whoever codes what, if you summarize my posts:

1. N900 should perform at least as good as Droid
2. Current emulators on N900 are not playable for many games due to no mapping for diagonals. Keyboard is not designed to allow two key presses to accommodate this through hardware (unlike G1). Start key is also too easy to press.

I do not see much if any conjecture there.

URLs please?

If you do not code it yourself, nobody will code it for you. That simple, yes.

Classic. This is the exact type of environment that will stunt the actual sales of the N900, since apps help to drive sales. In some regards, the N900 is like a modern day ham radio model, since almost everything is being fostered and created by the community and not much direct commercial app development and support (for now?). In spirit of course, since software is not exactly a big issue for radios then

Emulators are a niche, but the same principle could be used in that consumers fuel the "economy" of a device- if commercial success is intended for the N900. If not, no harm no foul

It is all good for me, since regardless of anything else, I have a kick a55 media and web device that fits fine in my pocket. If the games an emulators come, it will be butter already on a tasty biscuit. Then again, I paid $422 after rebate,. Perhaps my perspective would be different if I paid significantly more

BTW, based on your tenure here, I can only guess you are being sarcastic about the Android and Maemo efficiency comparison. Please search with keywords Android, Maemo, layer, Dalvik, and multitask. Very interesting posts from people that include Android devs. In summary, Android has to work on many chipsets, so the code is at a higher level and less access to hardware functions by default. Splintering is happening though, so this could change in time.

Update:

Thinking about it, perhaps it is better the N900 apps are developed as they are now, since provides better feedback and an actual product / app solution that the majority of users here would like to have. Very strong points for a vertical supply model for apps, since less reliance on money and fosters self-sufficiency for development of the apps.

Either I have just had a mini-epiphany or the caffeine is kicking in

Well, you get what you pay for. You download something for free, come here to complain about it, and expect unknown people to satisfy your complaints, for free. You are then told to go help yourself, to the best of your abilities (or lack thereof). Why does this surprise you?

Still waiting for those URLs.

PS: Do note that most people are reasonable, i.e. they will not complain about something they have got for free. Only a chosen few require reminding of the obvious. You should probably be proud to be one of the few.

I prefer "constructive complaints", but a "complaint is a complaint" none the less. Charge sustained!

Still, my point is that I and others would be more than happy to pay people to make apps we would like to use. Then again, if people do not point out issues for even free apps (aka complaints), how do things improve? This is a forum for discussion, or should issues always be PM'd to the dev or users make their own?

As far as the links you request, there is no difference from you searching or me. Aside from multiple posts, here is a fair summation. Also please review Coreplayer teams discussion about trying to make video codecs for Android. they point out the resource issues as well. No such resource restrictions with Maemo 5, or we would not see Mplayer working very well, or the codec pack behave well, either.

Well, licensing some Android-based emulator from its author and porting it to Maemo5 will cost in the $10k-$20k range by my rough estimates. Are you willing to pay this amount of money?

Then again, if people do not point out issues fro free apps (aka complaints), how do things improve?
To give you an example of what a useless complaint is, I will take your frequently expressed complaint about the lack of diagonal keys in my emulators. So, I am starting fMSX on this N900, run a game, select "Show virtual joypad layout", and touch the diagonal spot at the screen. The game character moves diagonally. This functionality is present in all my products. Case closed. So, not all complaints are equally useful. And not all complainers are equally useful also.

As far as the links you request, there is no difference from you searching or me.
You claimed that you read it somewhere that Maemo is so much "faster" than Android, so I thought you would have a link to the source where you read it. A single random blog post you have just referenced does not have enough credibility, as far as I am concerned: I simply do not know who this guy is.

fms:

A few questions:

1.

Interface and playability debates aside (subjective), would you allow someone to add custom key mapping to your apps that also includes diagonals? Would this be a complex and time consuming addition to your current versions?

2.

Would your 6502 package work for a PC Engine emulator for the N900?

3.

As I mentioned before, why port Android apps over when you already have a more than solid foundation to make equal or better on the N900?

Would you be interested in taking some "constructive" points and perhaps modify your current apps and sell them in the future market for Maemo 5? I am willing to bet people will be more than happy to pay for the apps. Work should always be rewarded when at all possible.

BTW, I have NEVER said your apps were not appreciated and actually have stated they are.

I wouldn't try selling emulators..it doesn't work that well, especially if your dealing with a company like Nintendo. While technically emulators are legal, law sadly isn't about what's legal or not. It's about how much money you have more than the other guy. If you can drag the case long enough that the expenses are to much for the little guy you'll win regardless of the legal standing.

But donations on the other hand..

No, as I do not consider lack of diagonal keys an issue. See above for the reason why.

No, it won't be complex, but I have other things to take care about.

Yes, it would.

It was your suggestion to port Android apps, as you claimed that they were better than the current Maemo apps. Personally, I feel pretty satisfied with my own apps (they do what I want them to do), but strongly encourage you to try porting Android apps to Maemo: the more apps the better.

I consider complaints on the case by case basis. Your particular complaints were considered and not found constructive.

sell them in the future market for Maemo 5?
It is generally unwise to discuss business plans with people not directly involved in them. Sorry.
