yes and no.

its probally a chip that all the phones carry(wether it be lack of qual control or a different make) not being able to be dealt with by the f/w because it cannot handle the variance in its behaviour.

therefore there is a chance the f/w can be fixed to sort out this tollerance out.

its both combining.

basically like a bad driver for the conponent/ or a bad conponent for the driver..

its like what was first the chicken or the egg

still partly hardware, partly linux kernel.

a) motorola droid has similar problems(linux kernel + same processor)
b) it is related to power saving modes
c) that was all

so with up to date information given publicly, it might be fixed with sw or not. the safest way is to get a replacement device.

mine never rebooted once

so if the software is the same then it must be hardware

having said that IS the software the same? I mean the software tha comes preinstalled.

For example, in the thread about the FM transmitter, different people report difference voltages etc, which means there are at least some differences in the software from device to device.

I am trying ti be careful with software that I install but I have installed quite a bit from testing and devel

yorg yes its hardware but not neccesarily due to a hardware fault- ie nothing damaged at all, and the f/w not being coded correctly to deal with the tollerance.

well this is the general consencious by nokia..

all i know for fact is that if you disable the power off mode on a once rebbooting machine- it doesnt reboot anymore and acts fine.

i fm transmittor varies because of countrys pirate radio laws. i think nokia messaging may not be on some- i dont think the linux kernal is any differnt on any device tho.

I sent mine for reparation/replacement to the seller (the phone house), regarding the issue and the bug thread, i perfectly know they can't fix it, so i hope they'll replace the phone by a new working one, because despite this problem, i love it.

IMO, Nokia has to communicate about the debug process and what they propose if it's not firmware fixable. I'm very disappointed about their silence.

Like others i disabled the power off mode, my device worked great for ten days, then the issue came back. I don't believe in a firmware fix.

Here's an email I got from Nokia support

Hi Jon,

Thank you for e-mailing the Nokia Care Contact Center.

In response to your inquiry about your phone, we would like to inform you that if you purchased the phone through our online store or Sales department and interested in returning the phone, it should be 14 days upon receiving the device. You may need to contact our Sales department as they are the one handling this issue and they will authorize your return and provide you with an RMA code and return instructions on how to send the phone back. You may contact them at 1-866-596-6542. Operating hours are from Monday-Friday, 9:00am-9:00 pm EST and Saturday from 10:00am-7:00pm EST. Our Nokia Sales representative is more than willing to assist you with that.

To answer your other concern, this is to let you know as of the moment, there is no available firmware update for the phone. Next software release will be on the first quarter of this year. Probably, the latest will be early march. If you are experiencing problems with your phone, we suggest you to try the following troubleshooting steps:

1. Ensure that the battery is fully charged
2. Remove the battery for 15 minutes. Reinsert the battery and turn the device back on.
3. Check that you are using a Nokia battery and charger compatible with your phone model.
4. If you have access to another battery and charger of the same type as yours, try substituting them to determine if the issue is with the phone, the battery, or the charger.

If you have any additional questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us again. To ensure proper handling of your case, kindly continue using the current subject line.

Thank you very much for your email.

Kind regards,
Anna B.
E-mail Specialist
Nokia Inc.
Of particular note is the notice about sending it in for RMA and how the next firmware update isn't scheduled until march at the latest. I mailed mine back to newegg yesterday hopefully to receive a working device in about a week.

I got my n900 about 2 days ago and it has rebooted randomly so far about 20 times or times now. I did the check with /proc/bootreason and I got 32w_to message and I did the permanent fix to pmconfig. But the device still reboots but it is a the same place everytime. If I'm online (wifi or 3g) and I'm logged into skype and google talk and lock the touch screen and keyboard. My n900 will reboot when I pick it up again and launch a program of some sort.

send it back mate, although the pmconfig fix works for me, the only way i can run my device all day is to not have any widgits running.

if you really want to pesereve with this , try a reflash see how it goes , then if you get reboots apply the pmconfig fix again.

also are getting the same 32w reboot reason since the perm fix.
