No, you can backup onto the internal memory. It's very easy to do, just run the Backup app, you'll see.
Don't know what happens if you brick it and need to restore though

Hint: You can't get it to work in Windows 7 if you didn't use the flasher before because the device freezes before Windows 7 can install its drivers.

Doesn't seem any quicker or slower to me. I'm surprised people are reporting that. That's why I say it's the placebo effect
