Ok, so because I've gotten accustomed to not having access, well at least not easy access, to Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Blogspot, and sometimes even Google I've learned to accept the fact that while living here in the People's Republic of China I would not have access to these on the N900.

But I've recently discovered that those of us in China will not even be able to download pretty much ANY of the great apps on Ovi Store and this is just too much to handle. so please, please if you know of any work-arounds so that I can access blocked material from my N900 that would be great. or maybe a way to get the apps offline and transfer them onto the phone somehow...

Has anyone figured out a way to get around firewalls while using the internet on the N900? is this possible, to hide your IP address? and I'm not talking about WEBSITE PROXIES since those wont work when downloading from the app manager. I need something like a VPN I guess, I'm not sure how it works but a tunnel to hide ALL my activity from my provider here.

damn dude!! I've heard stuff like this on the news about China internet restrictions but always thought it was over exaggerated a bit, but really, is China that bad??

I would answer you now but I'm not using a proxy at the moment and I'm sure the industrious fellas at the censorship bureau are watching every keystroke. lol. yes, it is that bad. Google gets blocked on your IP if you search for the (wrong) keywords. Facebook got blocked around the time of the riots in July in Xinjiang.

tsocks might be a good first stop. You'd need someone with an unrestricted (possibly outside of china?) network to be the provider.

I'm not sure if tor or anything has been ported yet - might be worth having a search.

I'm in Shanghai and have the same problem. Ovi store only shows 7 items in total. I'm using Skydur as my VPN (quite happy with it) and have already contacted them. They are working on a mobile solution but heaven alone knows when it will be ready to go.

As so very often, living in China sucks...

Google will fail out telling you it can't redirect you to https://store.ovi.com.

https://store.ovi.com will be a link. Click it. It will then redirect to http://store.ovi.com but be embedded in a Google page. Unless China is blocking Google, it should work in theory as Google is now proxying all the information to you.

P.S. - Should work with all sites you want as long as Google allows them.

http://translate.google.com/translat...w.facebook.com will do Facebook for example.

Just replace u=www.facebook.com with whatever site you're trying to get to.

Tried it immediately (can't sleep, still heavily jet-lagged from my last trip to Germany) but to no avail Just see the same old stuff and believe me, I'm sick of starring at that snow globe...

Google, just as anyone else, is playing along when it comes to China. Too much money to make here (or so they think).

Have you had a friend outside China try sending you the links to the apps to your phone number directly?
