In both cases it is 3.

It could be that the car isn't providing a signal? Is there a manual method for turning it on?

Thanks for all the help

I thought I'd ad my 2c here:

When I first connected up to the waveform monitor, the bars output were only about 50 IRE, about 1/2 a Volt. I suspected it was because I was on battery. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture because there was too much glare on the screen and the camera was in A/V instead of going manual, so not a useable image. You can see it on the "Test setup" picture though. Note the charger is connected but the level is still low. This makes sense since the charger won't run the phone without the battery installed, so I doubt it would boost internal voltages or something that would raise the output to 1V peak (standard NTSC video levels).

I began to think it was the bars image I was using so I pulled up a different picture that I took with the internal camera. It was also low, but when I went back to bars suddenly they were correct. Everything after that looked correct as well. I don't have an explanation for this. It basically screwed up my tests, but it may also be a clue for people who are having problems getting the video out working.

The closeup of the sync pulse looks good enough, although the transition from the sync tip to back porch (the "breezeway") is a little wider than spec. This is fairly common and may or may not be an issue. The low output when first connected is much more troubling.

The other thing I noticed is the chroma level is about 50% low, although again, that could be the image I am using.

So if your TV doesn't recognize the video out of the N900, I'd first try to display a bright image to see if that helps, or just wait a few minutes. You also need to connect the video source prior to connecting the cable to the N900, as per this thread.

Eric,

Thanks for posting some additional info. As I stated in my original post, I have no problem connecting my N900 to 2 other display devices. In both cases the display comes right to life.

Can anyone recommend a resource for better understanding how the N900 auto-detects?

TIA

Do you mean by whether a check is initialized by the plug being inserted into the headphone port, vs. dectecting a signal from video source?

If so, I'd check but I'd have to pull out my head unit again. I may have to do that anyway as I may have loosened a wire somewhere when I installed the TV Out cable. If needed, I can check tomorrow.

I mean, what software process runs to trigger the output change. I could run it manually if I knew. From what I read, the cable is looking for some power levels on the connection to help determine which mode to go in to. I am guessing that the AV ports in my car aren't putting out the power on the video. Thanks B

Yeah, that's above my paygrade. How about runnung the Conky app, then connecting to the TV? That should show what process is used.
