I have been using batlevel app with the shipping firmware of my device (42-11? or 1.0) Yesterday I updated to FW 1.1 and it was running perfectly but I noticed that that the batlevel app had dissaperd. So I found it in program>more and clicked the batlevel icon.

Next the screen start to flick and a couple seconds later I get a errormessage. I don't remember what it said but something failed. After that it did reboot, asked for pin-code and when the statusbar appears black window takes upp half the screen area and there are some flicking and then there's a little beep and it's reboots. And that's what happends over and over. This is ****ing frustrating.

I know that it's the batlevel app that mess upp things but I don't know how to remove it. Is there a way to go to a maintence console during bootup? I need to remove or disable the batlevel.

The last resort is to flash the unit.

What do you think? What to do?

/Ted

It's not actually the batlevel app that's causing the problem. I managed to trigger this about 5 times when testing PR 1.1. I managed to make hildon-desktop segfault just by moving shortcuts!

What I did was to enable R&D Mode which stopped it from rebooting, but left me with a tablet that had no WM running.

But this was enough to SSH in from my computer.

I edited /usr/share/hildon-desktop/transitions.ini and commented out:
  • [edit_mode]
  • snap_grid_size
  • snap_to_grid_while_move

After rebooting, my desktop worked fine, just with the loss of the snapping-to-grid feature which I did not care much for.

Ok good to hear that it's possible to fix.

Ok I don't very much about this unit and maemo5 but I suppose you enable R&D mode with the flash program and it's some kind of maintence mode?

How do you connect to the n900 with ssh? is there a ipadress or a name? I suppose it should be connected in flashmode via usb?

I think I will manage with ssh but I don't know to get there yet.

There are to many questions right now. Could you make a step by step guide for me?

(lessond learned, always keep everything uppdated before and major update. Rule nr1? ; )

enabling R&D mode with the flash program just made the problem worse for me, phone now reboots over and over when i insert the battery!
cant even disable red mode now.

also ssh wont work, every day it decides to stop working and i have to reinstall ssh on phone and pc 30+ times to get that working, and that cant be fixed either!
does this mean i cant flash it either?

For R&D mode, see http://wiki.maemo.org/R&D_mode - you need to pass the no-lifeguard-reset flag to prevent the booting. You need the openssh server installed and set up to ssh into the system, but you could also try using Ctrl+Shift+X to get an X Terminal directly on the N900 - I've not checked that this still works in that situation though.

If not, see http://wiki.maemo.org/Updating_the_tablet_firmware for flashing instructions. Make sure the battery is charged first (if the phone keeps rebooting even when plugged in to charge, you'll need to charge the battery up in another phone or a desktop charger first).
