I do something similar using xbindkeys. There may be other ways:

I know it's possible to run a script with xbindkeys but is it also possible to temporarily remap a hardware key to output a character as well?
Such as making the center d-pad on a N800 to produce the letter w?
Or do I require xmodmap to do this?

When I'm using irssi I need as much space as possible, and a keyboard shortcut would be perfect for this.
Ideas/solutions?
