One could say, maemo is a for mobile smartphones/ARM processor optimized version of debian/ubuntu. It also uses apt and some gnome-libraries (e.g. gconf), so why would anybody want to try porting ubuntu to the N900 ? This just isn't worth the efford in my eyes.
If Linus Torval was the father of Linux and Ubuntu, then Debian would be the mother of Ubuntu... Where as now Ubuntu is the driving force to further develop Debian. (so u can say ubuntu is now taking care of the parent)
Anyway, Debian is also what Maemo is based on, so we should be greatfull for ubuntu to help debian evolve
Edit:
oh, takes so long to write something usefull while working on other things, so the question was allready answere :/

Debian is the base for Ubuntu, but completely independent from Ubuntu/Canonical. So, nope, Ubuntu is NOT the/a driving force for Debian. And, no, Ubuntu is NOT taking care of Debian. Please don't make up these things.

Actually it is Debian that is the driving "SOURCE" behind both Ubuntu and Maemo
Ubuntu and Maemo are Debian's Children sort of speak . . . so that makes Ubuntu and Maemo brothers!!!!!
