I see that Maemo 5 is running Busybox 1.10.2, which was sadly released in May of 2008 . Is there a way to compile in a newer version, possibly with some commands added in?

Yes. Though you should make sure that you don't miss or change anything that is required to boot. The safest way would be to give the newer busybox a different name, and link to it whatever you need. If you really want to replace the current busybox, just be prepared to needing to reflash.

That may be beyond my current skills, or more to the point, beyond my perceived safety zone. I've rebuilt enough Linux boxes to be familiar with it, but not feeling comfortable yet. :| I will wait patiently for an "official" update. Thanks!

Yeah, I was wondering about this as well. There has to be some importance for the various updates... and would like to have those on my N900

It is possible to install the latest version - without reflashing. I described it here:
