Why don't you guys just do what I do and leave Bluetooth on all the time? Really, if it's such a hassle to turn it on and off... just leave it on. Problem solved.
Because I don't need BT all the time.
Because BT is a battery-eater.
Because I want it that way.
Because the 770 community has proven that it is possible to get it the way I want it.
Because it is better my way.
Note that this does not have a row of keys for numbers, which I didn't realize at first. They are accessed with a function key; you get used to it.
Just be aware that this means that you can't use the function keys, which are actually quite useful with the N800.
F3 = Application launcher menu
F4 = Main application menu
F6 = Toggle full screen
F7 = Zoom in/increase volume
F8 = Zoom out/decrease volume
F9 = Application switcher/home menu
Before I installed the last OS update, F12 invoked Power on/off; this doesn't work any more but that's no big deal. Anyway, because of this, I strongly recommend getting a keyboard with a separate row of numeric keys. You're missing a lot if you don't.

Sounds like a complaint just for the sake of complaining. BT doesn't have any sort of visible impact on my battery life. Just because it's on doesn't mean you have to use it.
The tablet's open source, so if your way is better and the 770 community proved it could be done - go ahead and do it.

I work for a cell phone gaming company. We have about 500 phones, some multiples. When I get in on Monday, I'm going to test some phones and see if/how much of a difference BT makes in battery life.

I've experienced battery life to decrease by as much as 30% if I leave BT on all the time (rough tests; I'll do a stopwatch test one of these days). Funnily enough it doesn't seem to be consistent. So it's not (entirely) a complaint for the sake of complaining.
Besides, according to your reasoning, the WiFi icon should disappear as well when the user disconnects: It should be left on all the time. Still, the WiFi icon is persistent. Weird, huh?
Re your jab about doing it myself: I believe I'm civil enough about my beef with the BT icon; I only bring it up after someone else has raised it and I don't demand I'm handed a solution. Still, Nokia chose to redo BT themselves for the N800, which now makes it part of the bundle I bought and paid for, so I'm entitled to nag. If it still were an OSS project, I would have politely told the developers about the issue I'm having and asked if they could be bothered to look into it. I'm polite to Open Source Software developers; I'm not required to be polite to Nokia, they got money instead.

Any particular phones I should test?
My P910i displays the same battery behaviour as my N800: up to 30% less juice from the battery with BT on.

Anyone that doesn't have PAN. Be sure to load up some preffered devices for it to look for. Try any Motorola/iDEN, BT phone.
Also, initiate and maintain a connection... see how that goes.
We digress though, the complaint is about a visible BT connection status indicator and access to the sub routine to initiate.
My complaint about DUN on the N800 has to do with Blanked out characters on the dialing string set-up keyboard. In fact the routine itself only allows numbers and pause and wait characters plus maybe "#" and "*", I can't remember.
In any event it won't allow me to enter an iDEN set up string, "S=2". No worky
I filed a bug report (bug #1095). I received a response indicating that this will be corrected in the next upgrade.
So my advice: File a bug report if there are any shortcomings that you would like seen corrected.

Average user would be connecting and disconnecting from wifi far more than playing with bluetooth. Some users never use Bluetooth at all. Doesn't make sense to keep it up permanently. I suppose it shows their phone roots in a way. Usually no way to quickly turn on/off on those either.
The "do it yourself" wasn't meant as a dig. Is there a technical reason why the 770 community solution wouldn't also work on the N800?
