Also there are two type of installed packages
installed (surprise!)
auto-installed these ones were installed because they were dependencies of others
when you remove an "installed" package it will remove all the "auto-installed" package on which it depends. So that it keeps your system clean.
if you install all libs manually and at some points you have no installed application that depends on it, you in fact do not need anymore this lib. if a lib is an "installed" package, the system will not remove it so you will keep a lot of useless crap on your device.
This has nothing to do with topic of this thread anymore.
Can you remind me a topic name? I thought it is named as "Application manager broken" and we now discuss the question - is Application Manager broken or it is a delibirate and undescribed "feature" ("undescribed" because nobody take care to say site visitors what they are prohibited from view then they ask multiple times - "what happens with repositories"/"where is my application" and take time in discussion about "repository down until Monday")
OK, there is my updates to Gonvert, PackageView and WifiInfo? Where is 3g2g-switcher? Where is wifi-switcher - actually it is difficult even to find exactly it's name if I don't know at least part of it (and exactly, I am not sure about it;s name - I need to go to bugs.maemo.org to find out this)
And can you say me - how I can find what there are some new updates if Application Manager just ignores it?
Either there is a problem with your package manager.. or these apps were not properly packaged to work in the Application Manager.
NDI has said he can see PackageView just fine in his... so mayhaps some more troubleshooting is needed with your package manager?

Can I just see it? If Application Manager doesn't allow me - it is OK, I could go to dpkg if I know that is it, but I have right to know without browsing /var/lib/dpkg/info/*.lists.
OK, I can see it in PackageView (may be it is a reason why regular N900 user can't see PackageView anymore now). But can I at least see what is in repositories and moreover - see what updates are available for already installed packages?

No, it is not only my - another people also have difficulties, I didn't open this thread, BTW. I just did PR1.1 update and didn't modify any. Actually, I am very conservative to manual intervention and it can be a primary reason why I am looking after Application Manager.
Yes, I did some apt-get and dpkg but that has nothing with updates loss and nothing with PackageView, Gonvert or WifiInfo.

Well fine.. but look directly above you -- obviously this isn't all package managers. Something is different on your guys' devices that don't see user applications and they should.
Have you tried deleting your repository caches and doing a fresh update?
As for names, I can find Gonvert if I use the search in the AM, and insert "onvert" in there.
No issues here? (willing to test)
Mu WifiInfo is 0.9.20091202-1 and update window in application manager says "(no updates)". But log full of messages about "Ignoring version from wrong domain" and apt-cache shows version 0.10
If you know something there I can set/change that domain - say it. But in my understanding (based on experience of bluez-hcidump setup) it just rejection of 'user/utilities' because application description is located in file 'Packages' in repository under section 'free'.
Previously, AM had some logic which allows acception of 'user/*' but it is seemed now that in hasted red pill removal it was deleted... or bug somethere here. For exam - the sequence of repositories may have toll.

Instructions, please I don't want to mess with AM.
As a side note, should I be getting stuff like libs as packages to be installed? It's a user interface after all. I'm assuming it doesn't hide actual apps?
mplayer is hidden. mplayer is an actual app.
I do not want kmplayer, so I had to use apt-get to install mplayer.
