1. A large number of OS 2006 apps will work on OS 2007, but if given the choice obviously install the OS 2007 version.
2. Repositories are now saved when you backup the device... at least they are on OS 2007!
The other option is to install xterm and becomeroot, then open xterm; sudo gainroot; cd /etc/apt; cp sources.list <yourflashcard>. To restore, you'll need to copy the file sources.list back to it's original location and then run "apt-get update". It may not be wise to restore this file between different versions of the OS.
