Amazing how so many people are already chucking a mini tantrum over this. How can Nokia provide Voice Navigation for free on the N900 when it dosen't exist, and is currently under development, and as some one has already mentioned N900 will get this is due course. Remeber all the other Nokia smart phones run on Symbian OS, which has allowed Ovi Maps to mature over time. Whats the difference if Nokia had not come out with this annoucement, as Sygic for Maemo will imminently be released.

Well, Nokia maps is the only Navigation service that doesn't have maps for couple of European countries including Serbia.
Damn Navteq. Before Navteq we had maps, and now even after couple of years - nothing.

    No, it's an internet tablet.

C'mon guys... anyone who bought this device should have known it's still a work in progress (and it was clearly marked as such by Nokia employees)... If Navigation will come I'll be very pleased, but I never counted on it. I'm already more than happy with my 5Gb world maps in Nokia maps.

id pay 800CAD for this fu*king thing, id be damned if we n900 users dont get proper treatment for a flagship product...

i dont care what nokia has labelled this product to be, at the end of the day we have paid full price for a product. i expect this premium device to come with service and support from nokia, not from a community. even though this community is the only thing thats attractive about n900.

This is a good move to make the premium features free.

Don't forget the n900 Ovi maps app is in it's early stages.
I remember when the symbian version when it came out in a similar state and since then it has grown to be quite usable.

Give it time and be patient.
Once the Ovi maps app is improved, It will be worth having turn by turn nav on it.

Oh and , quoting an Engadget piece on any subject is about as reliable as saying "Bob from the pub told me....."

    No offence meant to Bob

First take a look at http://wiki.maemo.org/Navigation_Tools. You'll find some of the tools support the route generation that I suspect you're wanting.

Also try out Maep, a nice port of a Google maps viewer with very fast startup. I think it's only in Extras-testing, so you'll need to enable that repository (http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras).
Errrr... Where is the turn by turn navigation? the voices and directions?

Quote from Nokia Michael Halbherr - "N900 owners shouldn't hold their breath, though, as Nokia is focusing on bringing its free navigation service to the next generation of Maemo devices. That's not to say that the N900 won't get it eventually, only that it's not currently on the roadmap. "

Not on roadmap - means they are not working on it yet. Not on roadmap in developers terms - "it will only get done if someone says okay for it... it will get done.. but first we will make it for the next gen Maemo - and then if we get QT to work on Maemo 5 - without to much hassle - we will make a M5 version..."

I think Herrn Halbherr's statement is a clear indicator that we will not see it at all.

Seriously can Nokia give me the same superb functionality as my TomTom HD Live?? NO!

Phone navs are ok to get about especially when abroad but if you want something decent, you won't find it on a phone!

My TomTom has rerouting automatically, traffic updates and so much more. But that still cost me £250 and it can't do anything else than tell me where to go (like the wife lol).
