I previously had an S60 device (E61i) which could store names and coordinates of locations aka landmarks/placemarks. These could then be accessed by different applications such as Nokia Maps. I could even send and receive these from others over SMS or bluetooth. It was very useful for arranging to meet with someone around town.

I can't find similar functionality in maemo. Is there an app available that I can install to get this feature?

Not yet. Neither tagging locations nor sending them.
