I'm a little late for this thread...

Hello everybody, I'm from Brazil and I've had my N900 for a month now. I'm also a proud owner of an N800.

As a Linux user, I must say that the N900 is a dream come true. Sure, it it still a little rough around the edges, as many have put it, but I have complete control over its functionalities (unlike, uh, every other phone in the market) and with the help of the community, many great apps will come.

got my N900 recently and found this website amazingly helpful. I'm in Texas, US right now. So far I love the N900 with Maemo.

Hi, i have just registered today and would like to say a big hello to everyone in this community.
I have had my n900 since the last day of last year so have only been using it for 3 weeks....mind you i have probably spent 20 hours a day with it and its now nicely protected with a full zagg invisible shield and stored in a krusell leather carry case(The invisible shield was a nightmare to fit) ……… Anyhow I digress ….i have played with all the basic features and installed the allegedly safe apps to play around with and have so far been pleased with what this device is capable of. I am eagerly awaiting the flash 10.1 release so as to access streaming from a wider source than at present and looking forward to learning Linux( as I type this I have Debian being installed on another pc…..hmmm me thinks i may be diving in too deep here as am a complete beginner to Linux. If anyone has any advice with my Linux undertakings feel free to message me as am more than sure that am gonna need some help along the way.

Hi @neotalk. Just been here a week or so but enjoying getting into spirited discussions.

I actually have my N900 sat in it's ship-package, unopened. Probably silly but I'm just holding out for Nokia's press release next week (silly really, but stranger things have happened)

I've used linux on a variety of devices - laptops, desktops, servers, mainframes, routers (even my smart radio is linux), PDA (zaurus), but never on a phone-- until now. I've also worked in telephony related sw development (protocols, messaging etc). Server-side though not device.

So I'm at home with linux, and phone stuff, but the combination is new

Hi back @ planetf1 . Am at home with a fresh copy of debian installed on the pc next to me looking at a almost blank desktop and thinking.........doh!

sounds like you know a lot about linux my friend.... perhaps you could message me and guide me through some basics like setting up a wireless connection in a new debian installation? its got me totally confused....again.......lol

If you just want to start getting familiar with linux generally I'd be inclined to try installing a desktop version of Ubuntu.

Theres a lot of information and guides at http://www.ubuntu.com/

I'd start off just trying to use it - web browsing, email, how to install/update software, configure -- just the basics.

Then over time you'll pick up how to do simple operations in the command line, which fundamentally will be very similar with what you do with Maemo.

Also saying hello! I ordered my n900 today, so it will be another 2-3 weeks till I finally can start thinkering.

I've been lurking around a few weeks, and despite the sudden change in spirits on the forum the last few days, I decided to buy a N900.

I will mainly use it as a phone and as a tool for my future job: journalism. I'm in the last stretch of my journalism masters. I think the combination of my Asus EeePC netbook and a n900 could be great when making items on the move. Just bring the two and a camera and microphone, and you're all set! Television, internet items, radio, newspapers: everything is possible.
A powerfull package of tools that fit in a small backpack!

Hello,

My Nokia N900 arrived last week of December, and I joined here pretty much immediately after. Hoping that Nokia will integrate a spellchecker on the N900, as this will make me look less of a fool when I email and take notes. Please take a second to vote on the brainstorm item I created.
