1. Install meaemo-location
2. Put a bookmark to http://maps.google.com/maps/m on your desktop.
You will get full screen map (with GPS location) which is much easier to navigate than the desjtop version.

This is terrible advice and yet, everyone gives it. You can't zoom out with that version of google maps mobile on the N900, so please don't offer it as a solution, until someone figures out a way.
