Have to confirm voip is well implemented and pretty robust on N900.
I'll second that - Last Thursday I ran an 90-minute conference call using my Sipgate account, with the N900 setup as a speakerphone and four of us talking to two overseas offices.

My boss almost canceled the call beforehand, because we couldn't get one of the meeting rooms which have a conference phone - He wants an N900 now

    Hello,

in my opinion the point is, surfing on youtube causes MUCH MORE traffic than voiping.

Youtube is okay - but the litte bit of voip not, because they want to make money!

I can confirm that voip via VPN works great! (on 3G of course!)

I just got to find a way, to enable VPN for 3g connection automatically.

    see here aswell: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...highlight=vpnc

    Bye

I have been doing a bit of testing and changed the codecs. I am using the G729 codec and have disabled the iLBC codec.

VoIP calls over 3G are now fine. Not perfect, but more than acceptable and a big improvement over calls made before I changed them.

Calls over WiFi are fine too. Well, at least the test calls to mobiles I made.

To edit the codecs file, you can follow these instructions(credit to Jakiman on the Whirlpool Forums:

    1. Install an app called Leafpad
    2. Install an app called rootsh
    3. Now go to xterminal then type:
    root
    4. Make a backup of the gstcodecs.conf file using following command:
    cp /etc/stream-engine/gstcodecs.conf /etc/stream-engine/gstcodecs.conf.orig
    5. Now run following command:
    leafpad /etc/stream-engine/gstcodecs.conf
    6. Leafpad app will open the file.
    7. You can now edit that fie then save it. Done.

To restore the settings to their original settings, you can do the following:

    cp /etc/stream-engine/gstcodecs.conf.orig /etc/stream-engine/gstcodecs.conf

    hello

for what is worth I just tested VOIP with skype and quality was the same as a normal voice call over 3g and over WIFI.

I am happy to post any settings if you know what I should look for!

    Cheers!

VOIP over O2's 3G was very good for me in Germany.
You could look at O2's plan. They have a monthly flat of 25 euros or so I think.
