You need an UI for Mplayer. You might want to install SIB or KMplayer:

- Have a look here for KMplayer:

http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/kmplayer/

No one recommends this UI for Mplayer, but you can try it;

- Actually SIB can be found only in Extras-Devel, I suggest to you not to go there unless you know what you are really doing; installing apps from Extras-Devel can seriously damage your N900.

Im confused.. you want to learn how to build a UI to a cmd line program? (not mplayer specifically)

Or you want to learn how to specifically install kmplayer or SIB?

How to do what?

Install KMplayer or SIB?

Well, for KMplayer you can simply use Maemo.org Extras repository.

I'm not sure you want to use the Extras Devel repository, trust me.

well I'm actually a software developer. a .NET developer. and I've been spending the past 3 days trying to get the MAEMO virtual machine to work. I think I'm almost there. I also think I'm going to write some new instructions because those current ones seem to be junk!

I want to learn how to use the extras-devel repository, but everywhere I read about it (like trying to get the MMS working) all it says is "use the extras-devel repository" . how do I use the extras-devel repository?

I have no problem flashing my phone if I mess up anyways.

Ok, all you have to do is adding the Extras Devel repository to your catalogs list:

Application manager --> Application catalogs --> New
Insert these datas:

Catalog name: Maemo Extras-devel
Web address: http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free non-free

Please if you have time read this page before using that repository:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Extras-devel

Hope this helps.

To answer the original question, you spawn mplayer in slave mode (it's a command line parameter) in your code and keep a pipe for input/output. Then you can send input and receive output from mplayer.
See http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/tech/slave.txt for details.

Roger, I'm a .NET developer as well, and I must say it's very unintuitive for someone who comes from a complete MS world to start developing for Maemo.

I'm running a VM with ubuntu for a couple of days and still hasn't found the right developing environment (Well at least I know it's not the scratchbox ).

Would be great if there will be new instructions. It's very frustrating to know that you know great C#/C++ but still helpless in the huge linux world...

PS - I must add, this community helps a lot with this... thanks!
