As another newbie like yourself the only part of your quedstion i can help with is re the iplayer URL not known and the reson why i can help is that when i first tried i was doing the same as you:

when in xterm and wanting to download you have to have the exact URL of the programme you want, similiar to:-

$ iplayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode..._18_Episode_2/

you do not type in

$ iplayer URL

the above URL i have posted is not complete but as a test you will find it further back in this thread on a post by another - it does work - its what i used to test my install

Very confusing and Question 3 - I still do not know what the exact bit is after videos - "' is this '", ' ", "' or " ' - several posts contradict each other as regards the exact syntax - I am pointing this out as a noob, hope you understand.

The ">>" makes it so that instead of the echo command printing to your screen, it appends to the end of the file that you provide after the ">>". You could also edit the file and insert the text between the ' '. I thought this would be easier (perhaps not!).

Whether you use " ' ' " or ' " " ' is unimportant, as long as they are matched correctly (so ' " ' " is wrong for example).

Again, this just FYI as this step sounds like it's been done correctly on your machine.

When I type: ls -l /home/user/.profile I get nothing which suggests "root" but I really didn't understand the output lol!

1. Disable extras-devel. Really hesitate before you re-enable it, and disable it quickly if you do. Never update with extras-devel enabled.

2. Close app manager.

3. Type the following commands in a new terminal (one at a time, answering yes to any prompts:

sudo gainroot
apt-get remove iplayer-dl
exit

4. Open up app manager, and check whether Ruby is in your uninstall list. If so, uninstall it.

5. Type the following commands in a new terminal (one at a time, answering yes to any prompts:

Code:

sudo gainroot
apt-get remove ruby
apt-get install iplayer-dl
exit

Then test by typing "iplayer". If you get a help message, you're done!

Also try this:

1. Check if you have, and if found remove, the extra-devel repo.

2. Execute the following to remove Ruby:

apt-get remove --purge ruby libruby1.8
apt-get clean
apt-get update

3. Execute the following to install it all again:

apt-get install iplayer-dl

downloaded same file yesterday over wifi fine.... today i get the following with every file (on 3G voda now as at work)

Are you sure it worked for Heroes before? I think heroes may not be available for iPhone (see one of the later "caveats" in the first post). You could try a different show, but as a 1hr show will take away half of what Vodafone deem "fair use" on their unlimited mobile broadband deal you might not want to!

I just switched to Vodafone mobile broadband and checked - I'm having the same problem.

Looks like maybe Vodafone have noticed an upsurge in iplayer traffic and so have blocked it (I knew I should have kept this to myself!

). Looks like wifi is the only way forwards.

starting to think ill never get this working. keep getting iplayer-dl not found. disabled extras-devel, run remove --purge and the like and reinstalled iplayer-dl but i still get iplayer-dl not found. anybody know of anything else i can try?

Please elaborate. I posted some quite detailed instructions a few posts ago. Did you follow them to the letter (starting at number 1)? When you get to the last step, type "iplayer-dl" instead of "iplayer" as you may not have set up the "iplayer" alias correctly.
