I did a quick search and couldn't find anything on this - and for that matter I may be being stupid and not seeing what's on the device. But the question is this:

N900 seamlessly switches between wifi and GPRS when I'm in range of a wifi it recognises. It's one of the things I love about it after years of having to connect manually with symbian and SE OS. Even more wonderful, it doesn't collect email when I'm on GPRS unless I tell it to, but does an email pass every 30 minutes if it's on wifi. Again, all without any intervention from me.

So... I have my skype account input. and my twitter account now synched in via the lovely new twitter-plug-in. But as far as I can see, I have to 'enable' them manually when I want them, and disable them when I don't.

Is it possible to set it up so that n900 automatically enables my voip accounts when I'm on wifi, and disables them (to save data plan and conform to TOC) when I'm on GPRS? That ought to be the sort of automation that fremantle would do on toast, no?

Is it available and I'm not seeing it? (perfectly possible) Is there already a brainstorm and I missed it? (Also possible) Suggestions?

Interesting one... i think a rules based enable/disabled thing has been discussed before - but for other things....

I only finally today enabled my wifi :P hehe - interested what twitter plugin you are talking about though - i still use the fb/twitter main web pages to update - wouldnt mind something that does both

I use Mauku (in extras) for quick twitter checks. I have witter (from extras testing) under testing - I like it but it's slower than mauku. Does a lot more though. And I used the twitter integration.

You cannot escape my tweets!

Looks like I didn't miss something in search then.

lol i've cheered up today no more "Go search you fool" posts
I think they are discussing auto switch on different connections when using apps or something like that.

Mauku i find to slow, easier to load the page - might try the intergration though

I guess posting an idea on New Years Eve just as everyone was going out was not the smartest move (though it was atually the thought that people might skype-call me if it was enabled that sparked this).

Anyone else know if n900 does this, or could do this... or interested in making it do this?

If this doesn't already exist then I'm definitely interested in working on it. I'm new to the maemo api, though--I'm not sure how you'd hook into wifi availability or how you progrmmatically control the built-in voip availability stuff.

there is a super-duper scheduler/context/connection/Location aware action framework already in development. It's called Shepherd. See here :
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...hepherd&page=6

I'm anxiously waiting for it to appear 'in the open' as well, even if I have to grab it from extras-devel. I already use lots of stuff from there, I guess I like living on the edge

Oh that's a point - shepherd might do that. I'm not really aware of its potential as it's still in devel.

Given that the email settings change automatically according to connection type, it shouldn't be hard for voip to do the same, I would have thought.

But then, I really jnow nothing about code

The functionality is not there (yet?). In the meantime you may want to vote for bug 5345.

I've got a quick hack of a python script that does this (attached). I'm thinking it could be packaged to run under upstart, but I'm not too familiar with upstart (or with debian packages), so I'm hoping for some help there.

Currently what it does is:
  • when you connect to wifi, it sets all of your IM/VOIP accounts to "available"
  • when you disconnect from wifi, it sets all of your IM/VOIP accounts to "offline"
and that's all. There are probably lots of ways it could be smarter but right now it does what I need it to do. With Shepherd on the way I figure all we really need is a quick hack to tide us over.

On the other hand, if people really want it to be tweaked one way or another I'd be happy to work on it a bit more. Or y'all could tweak it yourselves, of course

Until it gets packaged, the only way to run it (as far as I know) is from the command line, so if you're not comfortable with that then you'll have to wait a bit. But if you are comfortable with that, you'd download it to your n900, preferably rename it to remove the .txt extension, chmod +x <the python file>, and then run it.
