I get it.

Since you unlocked the phone to make the call, you expect the phone to remain unlocked so you can initiate the next action. Makes sense to me, because you've proven your physical proximity the phone by speaking on the phone call and convincing the other person it's worth staying on the line. If you walk away, and they hang up, *that's* when the countdown to screenlock should start. Or when you hang up.

I think you've got a valid enhancement request there.

ok, i will explain my problem again...

my phone is ringing, i take my phone from the desk and hold it in my hands (portrait mode), seeing who is calling me. just in that moment while holding it in my hands, the screen gets black, the phone is still ringing, but i cant answer it because the screen is black. there is nothing at the proximity sensor or something like that.
And, always, when the call has ended, the screen is locked, no matter if the screen was locked or unlocked before getting the call!

What I have found out is that this problem doenst happen, if i set my phone app to be only in portrait mode.

the problem just occurs if i am using the automatic change of the screen at the phone app (dont know the correct name of this in english)

now i hope you guys have udnerstood my problem... maybe someone has a workaround or something like this... or should i open a bug report?

I have exactly the same problem as you have described it. It is quite annoying. I am hoping for a solution as well. It does not seem we are the only ones having this. I too have missed several call because of this.

this has happened to me before, but it's not quite my main problem.

when i receive a call, i get the option to either answer or reject it. if i hit answer, the screen goes blank and locks itself.

the problem is, most of the time i'm actually trying to activate the loudspeaker and i have to manually unlock the phone with the switch. it's very annoying and difficult when i'm trying to use the phone with only one hand. the sad thing is, i've found that if i hold the phone up to my ear, wait a couple of seconds, and THEN take the phone off the display will turn back on and the phone will unlock itself.

It happens when you have a light source (like the sun outside, or a lamp inside) is directly shining on the N900 and you have a screen protector on it. Workaround is to use the lock/unlock slider to unlock it.

I also have this problem occasionally. I go to contacts or last dialled, and select a contact to call. As soon as I dial, the screen goes blank (locked). The call works fine, but if I need to use the phone mid call, I have to use the hardware slider to re-activate the screen. Also, when the other person hangs up and I look at the phone, the screen is still locked. I press the slider to unlock, and then press End Call. Sometimes, after pressing end call, I have to unlock the screen again to exit the phone app.

It happens almost every time I call my girlfriend so assumed that it was just with a particular contact. But from what a poster above suggested, it seems it may be direct light hitting the proximity sensor. I usually call her after I leave my office so am outdoors in bright light. Now to think of it, it doesnt really happen indoors.

I can attest that I have also experienced this problem few times. My solution was to use the side flip switch to lock and unlock the device, the screen powers up.

It is not related to the proximity sensor since if I have the phone far away from my body the screen fails to power on. In my case, it is not always reproducible and I think it is a software bug ...

mine happens to me regardless of the light condition - indoors, outdoors, etc. i'm considering punching a hole in my current screen protector though to see if that's causing the problem.

I have same problem.

To test, call some free number and use your finger to hide/unhide the proximity sensor.

Screen get blank or lights up in a totally random manner. For me, it's definitively a software bug.

I tested: bug appears with "only portrait" and "automatic" mode in phone app.

Screen lights up when i face the phone with the screen down (like if you want mute a coming call).

I have the same issue! At first I thought it was the light shining down on the sensor. When my phone rings, I'd tilt my phone so that I can see who is calling. In doing so, the screen turns black(as it is also ringing) until I tilt the phone to where it faces down. The screen lights up as soon as I do that..but I am unable to see who is calling or even pick up for that matter. Lately, it's been happening more and more often.. I have removed the screen protector. Just the other day, my phone was on the table next to me faced up when it started ringing..the screen didnt even light up! I'd have to unlock it first to see who is calling which can be a pain.
