Its actually a really good phone, VOIP or regular cellular. Both work great for me, I've been very suprised with the skype call quality on the device too!

My only complaint currently is that there are no persistent icons for voicemail or sms messages so its easy to forget about them.

Same to me and it's also my only point and shoot camera (have 2 Nikon DSLRs)
it would be much better as a phone if it has voice dialing

The n900 functions as my sole phone, not even a house phone for backup, and after one week, i have to say Im incredibly impressed bhy this device. Amazing piece of hardware, and the software is catching up nicely. Want MMS and more flexibility with sound/notification settings, but estatic and fell its well worth the price. Using Tmobile in the greater NYC area.

I use it as a phone without any problems. Most of the time, I use it with a bluetooth headset. It's my first smart phone, so maybe I don't have the same expectations or habits to unlearn as other people. Really, the N900 is the nicest phone I have ever used.

The N900 (and its' mobile number) is the one and only phone I use. I don't have a landline. The N900 does the phone job beautifully.

I use it as my main phone. In fact I sold all my old ones to help pay for this. So far it does a great job. Really does everything I need phone wise. It might be even better when it actually gets some wear and tear and then I can stop worrying about it getting scratched etc.

The eBay auction of my old Nokia N97 is finishing in a few hours. At that point it will be my only device (the emergency Nokia 1208 I have somewhere does not count). Well, have not really used the N97 since Rover arrived, anyway

I would recommend getting one of those cheap rubberised cases off eBay. Yes it adds some bulk but between that, a lanyard and a Clarivue I am not that worried anymore.

I second that.
I have a few those rubberised hard cases of different colors (also for my 5800XM), change it once a while to have a new look
or you can get the black one if you just want protection
