1. Go to X-Term and root shell and kill video thumbnailerd:

killall gst-video-thumbnailerd

2. Install Extra Decoders Support (package name 'decoders-support').

2. Install KMPlayer and enjoy (don't use system media player until Nokia fixes bug 8165).

3. Vote for bug 8165 - https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8165 for faster resolution.

Alternatively, you may try to remove any HD video, any non-good codec video or reconfigure tracker to skip directory with your video...

That all work for me.

hmm... but it's not just video files that media player does not play any more - mp3s and internet radio are not played either.

and i only have 2 videos on my N900, both taken with its camera, and both played just fine before media player got borked...

thus i am not sure at all that this is related to the bug you linked to.

ok, re-flashed my N900 and media player is back to normal
now to restore all apps... and see if one of them causes mp to fail...

Selecting the "local" media renderer while it's the only option does nothing except pause playback. Pressing the pause button should have the same effect in this case. Something in your audio system must have been broken.
I had this volume issue with FW 2009.42-11 once, too, but a reboot fixed it.
