There are some simple examples on the notify-python repository:
http://trac.galago-project.org/brows...y-python/tests
But I think you should first try using the Maemo native notification mecanisms, like the Hildon notifications (if you are using python-hildon already, this is the best option IMHO), or creating a simple status bar widget.
For hildon notification examples, see:
http://wiki.maemo.org/PyMaemo/UITuto...cation_widgets
http://gitorious.org/pymaemo/python-...ldon-banner.py
For a status bar example:

thanks for the links. unless I'm mistaken, python-notify is the only way to flash the led? i use the other hildon note/banner notifications where appropriate. but for direct messages and mentions I really want to cause the same behaviour as receiving an IM or email.
will try out some of the examples later
However whilst I can find the C APi doc, I'm afraid I've failed to guess what the python invocation would be.
I can see there is a python-notify but haven't found any actual python code that I could use to figure this out.
Any pointers would be most welcome

Check out Witter, a twitter client for N900
http://danielwould.wordpress.com/witter
If Witter isn't working for you, eg crashes/doesn't start, gives errors etc etc. Please run it from x-term using:
run-standalone.sh python2.5 /opt/witter/witter.py
This will generate diagnostic output. Without this I cannot help you.
