I have searched on this but cant find a definate answer. is it actually possible to use the device as a remote yet or not? and obviously if so, then how?

I haven't managed to get it working but others have.

search for an app called Irreco - IR remote or just irreco , i have installed it but not used it yet

I have used irreco and it works quite well. However as far as I know, there is no universal remote control available, just specific models, but they could have updated it and I didn't know.

thanks .. I'm having trouble downloading it though. i keep getting 'unable to download. application package not found'.

there is also a qtirreco remote, you'll need to download the data

irreco isn't developed any more.
qtirreco is still alive. so imho qt should be the better solution because you still can report bugs and they are going to be fixed.
