My apologies if this isn't the right place, but I couldn't find anything better.

Is anyone here using an N900 is San Francisco, CA, USA? If so, what network, and how's the reception in various parts of the city?

Surprisingly my reception has been better with my N900 than it was with my E65.

I'm with AT&T (yes no 3g, but i have wifi at home and work so no need), but before on my E65, I couldn't get any signal at home (in north beach) unless I was standing nearby a window, now I can use my N900 anywhere in my home. And at work (in the presidio) I have absolutely no problem with reception.

From the Mission to Richmond to Soma... I haven't had any issues yet.

I too am getting better reception on my N900 than I was previously on my Palm Treo 750. I'm on T-Mobile and parts of the city where I would previously drop calls (home office, or top of 17th and Clayton for example) I no longer do so, though going over the Bay Bridge I still do around Yerba Buena Island (must switch towers around there).

Thanks for the reply. I'm particularly interested in the downtown core (say, near Montgomery station or thereabouts) and the Sunset (West Portal station), should you happen to have comments about those areas.

How's the data speed on T-Mobile? That's who I've been looking at.

Well, I typically don't have 3G running unless I have a real need for speed, though I did earlier today enable it to VNC my Mac Mini at home, as I needed the info in an old e-mail I had sent my office. Certainly not ideal like it would have been over WiFi but doable.

Sitting here in my home office (East side of Twin Peaks) using 3G where I previously had connection issues on GSM, I get 0.78 Mb/s download and 0.32 Mb/s upload. Moving out to the South facing deck I get 1.05 download and 0.55 upload. (2.5G got me 0.13 down and 0.07 up!)

Interestingly, as I use epc.tmobile.com as my apn, it shows my location somewhere in the midwest. Kansas I guess.

I'm not downtown too much so not sure about there.

I have a N900 with AT&T and my reception has been fantastic. I work near the Ferry Building on Market St. and I've yet to drop calls. Though where I sit in the office I often loose data connection (but still keep the GSM connection).

As for Westportal its pretty nice. My Girlfriend lives down there so I'm always around . Like with downtown SF the connection has been pretty solid throughout.

Though I will admit the data speeds here in SF are horrid!! Its all those iPhone people hogging all the data love. It took me 1 hr to do that update prior to 51.1 (that 20 MB one) in SF. If you're not a data sponge (I'm not so I'm okay with AT&T) everything should be fine. Don't expect any reception in the Metro tunnels though!

For people reading this thread in the future: the T-Mobile reception and data speeds so far have been nothing short of amazing. Haven't actually used it as a *phone* yet, though.
