i think the sound is decent for a set that came with a device.

was contemplating buying the nokia wh-701 headset to replace them as the have a remote which is something i'd like....if it will work with the n900.

does anybody know if it's compatible or know of any good in-ear canal earphones with a remote (not fussed about a mic) that will work perfectly with the n900?
can anybody help with this or have any suggestions?

I don't know if such thing exists. I have a Jabra BT-3030 with built-in controls and microphone with a normal 3.5mm connector, I have not tried it but I assume it works. That might be worth a shot if you really need a control.

On-topic: I use a pair of Creative EP-630 in hear headphones, they work perfectly.

Nokia remotes are only partly compatible with the N900, read this as an example : https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7945
it says the bug is fixed, but it is just not considered a bug by the Nokia bug guy. Looks like the N900 isn't supposed to support more than the "answer phone" button.

what's certain is that remotes made for Apple products are not compatible, Apple came up with a different wiring than what Nokia already had when they designed their remotes.

it'd be nice to have a decent set though that still has a remote

Does the official nokia connector also have three "tracks" in the 3.5mm connector? If not, those would probably not work.
