I want to install programs onto my n900 but I don't have wifi in my house setup atm so I'm trying to do the following
1. download software/programs from this site onto my computer
2. copy that file onto n900
3. install from n900

But everytime I download something its called ".install" extension and I have no idea what I'm suppose to do with that. My phone doesnt pick it up no matter where I copy the install file onto the phone.

I know this is probably a very nub questions but can anyone tell me how I should be doing this?

(on a side note is .install and .deb the same thing? i read a whole bunch about red pilling but sounds like i should stay away from that).

The .install files won't help you - all they do is set up the necessary repository on the N900 then download & install the file.

You're pretty much doomed to failure doing this anyway - any .deb file you do download will have a whole load of dependencies, which you'll then need to find & download, and they'll have dependencies of their own, and so on.
