Is it possible to somehow turn off the beep when instant message (gtalk/skype/...) is received?

If I'm in middle of a conversation(s) it's disturbing to have the sound played after every received message. Preferred behavior would be to beep only if the screen is off.

Completely off is easy: Go to settings, profile, set volume for im message to 0.

And you still have visual feedback in led so you still can see you have an im.
