When I use maps and select sattelite veiw it doesnt change to what I would expect which is a google maps style actual view of the area it just looks like the standard crappy map with slightly different colours.... is this normal?

There are free ovi maps on the n900 out of the box...

No, you should get a satellite pic view. I guess how much you can zoom into it varies by location.
