I have just sent a message to the peeps from tehkSEVEN:

Pretty much everything you hear out there about the N900 is pretty positive, though what recently happened to me and to an increasing number of nokia customers is just incredible.
While plugging and unplugging the regular charger carefully without using any exaggerated force the microUSB port of the N900 breaks off and comes out together with the charger plug. Nokia Care Centres decline any repair/exchange, stating this is not covered by warranty, and denying it is a design flaw on their behalf.
Talking to a few people who know about Mobile Phone Construction Designs (including an ex-employee from Nokia) revealed that the placement and the connection of the miniUSB on the main board inside the N900 clearly is a design flaw, resulting in serious damage after an extended period of time (in same cases, including mine, this unfortunately happened after only a few weeks) which renders the device useless.
Everyday we are getting in more and more cases. People who have had their devices for months and never thought this could happen are coming to speak to us after discovering that Nokia has decided to leave us in the dark.
On maemo talk there is already a thread with 30+ pages. you can read some about it here:
We are getting more and more frustrated and will soon begin to start collecting details of all people affected to prepare a law-suit against Nokia Care.
The current situation is completely unacceptable - Nokia still denies any responsibility, and many users (including myself) are getting increasingly frustrated that we can wave our 600 Euro-Devices goodbye.
I would like to hear your take on this - may be you could help our cause by spreading the message, that would already be a big step in the right direction and very much appreciated by the community.
Thanks for your interest, I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards,
Haus3r
I sincerely hope they will spread the word

IMHO I don't think this will work. They will tell you to send it to Nokia Care who will very likely send it back to you, saying that it's BER and not covered by warranty.
Hello nappleton! I'm also on the vodafone eForum, you may have spotted me!
I'm very pleased you've had that confirmed! After waiting for the N900 - and being thoroughly impressed with it - I'd hate for this fault to sadden my experience of the phone!!
HI matty moo ;0) yes i have seen you :0) i still use the eforums too :0). It's good news vodafone will cover this but fingers crossed we don't get the fault. Do you remember a few weeks back when we were trying to get out hands on these babies do you remember it was menstioned by some 191 staff nokia had recalled all stock to fix this problem? I wonder if this was true and might have something to do with the very low stock and near inability to get it?

I do remember that, nappleton - I reckon it was a little bit of fabrication on vodafone's part though
I just hope our N900s are in the "good" batch, we've waited long enough for them!! The thing is, the USB port will get SO much use over time, it seems ludicrous if they have used a cheap component... if there is a fault with a lot of handsets, Nokia will have to sit up and take notice, they can't be promoting the N900 as their iPhone killer if your heart skips a beat everytime you disconnect your phone from the charger.
It gets even funnier in that I saw 5 sites tonight that ripped off engadget ripping me off.... lol.
EDIT: weird... I logged into engadget to post, and I can enter text in a reply, but there's no Post button for the form. So I can't comment. WTF???
Its a new comment system they have....if you look close to the bottom right of the article there is a small button that says "Turn comments On | Off"...Kinda weird.
And about the connector issue, I read somewhere on here (this thread?) to just file down the prongs on the connectors. I did that and it puts little to no stress on the charging port so now I don't loose sleep anymore. Maybe you guys might want to give that a try. You're only removing excess metal so it has no effect on performance of course.

But-- I have comments on. I see other comments. I can enter text into a new comment box. But there's no form button.
EDIT: Submit button will now show up for me on IE6 or IE7, but does in microb. Amazing.
