In general something like "power profiles" might be useful - each profile has options related to device power consumption - back light level, wireless connection(s) allowed/disabled and processor frequency.
You can switch between profiles manually (ie switch to "low consumption" when battery is low) or automatically - say when you plug the charger in.

Install it, then set your brightness and backlight timeouts while plugged into AC, unplug and set them to something different. It's been working great for me for a couple months now and is one of the first things I do when I install a new firmware. Hope this helps.

Vote for bug/enhancement #1046.
Particularly I have set up backlight to be be always on when charging.
