It IS annoying. Reporting them as spam is gratifying, I suppose, but doesn't really stop them. They just come back as another user.
I wonder if there would be a way to use captcha for, say, the first 5 or 10 posts when a new user signs up. If you notice, they never post more than 3 or so posts before either getting caught or they go away.

Given there's a captcha for searching as an unregistered user, I don't know why registration isn't captcha'd?

Just prohibit new users to post for a few days since registration. That is annoying enough for spammers and they move on.
