Spammers usually have a url posted in their spam. In another forum I'm it they don't allow you post a url until you have posted 10 messages. Yes a spammer could post 10 useless message, but usually they don't have the time or inclination to do that.

Are there any plugins that would allow any user to flag a spam message and thus instantly alert Reggie?

This sounds like a good idea. Also, keep in mind that spammers usually start new threads, so you could allow them them to post in existing threads, but only prevent them from starting new threads.

Right you are... and once a spammer is reported Reg could assign them to the "Miserable" users group if he is using VB and has installed this gem>> http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=121886

When classed as miserable, a member suffers ;

1. Slow response (time delay) on every page (20 to 60 seconds default).
2. A chance they will get the "server busy" message (50% by default).
3. A chance that no search facilities will be available (75% by default).
4. A chance they will get redirected to another preset page (25% & homepage by default).
5. A chance they will simply get a blank page (25% by default).
6. Post flood limit increased by a defined factor (10 times by default).
7. If they get past all this okay, then they will be served up their proper page.

This way they think no one is on to 'em and that the forum just isn't worth the effort.

If what you are proposing would be widely adopted then the bots would just need to be modified slightly to wait a few days.

I hope the admin tries out Akismet and what Project Honeypot has to offer.

I like YoDudes suggestion - the forum slow down sounds excellent.

I have quite a few similar spambot-throttling software ideas for my sites but I cannot code.

The Akismet plugin for vBulletin already exists and will probably solve the spam- problem here.

Using it, and the Project Honey Pot software will also help other users because they are both "distributed black lists systems".
