One way of saving money with the n900 would be to use Web SMS services instead of your network provider's SMS. However, while usable in the browser, these web services often have their own address books, and "live" outside of the conversations in Maemo 5. Would it be possible to integrate Web SMS services seamlessly with the Maemo infrastructure?
For example, I have 50 SMS free each month based on my contract with GMX, and they even push an iPhone app to leverage that on the go. One transport they offer for SMS is Email, i.e. you send an Email to sms-service@gmx-gmbh.de that has the header format [MSISDN of recipient]: [content of SMS], the SMS is delivered - albeit without a sender address.
