I had a lot of fun with the systemlink and so I optify the N900 default Theme to free up the rootfs. On this way you save ~6MB

just type in xterm

Code:
sudo gainroot

mkdir /opt/themes/alpha
mv /usr/share/themes/alpha/backgrounds /opt/themes/alpha
ln -s /opt/themes/alpha/backgrounds /usr/share/themes/alpha
mv /usr/share/themes/alpha/gtk-2.0 /opt/themes/alpha
ln -s /opt/themes/alpha/gtk-2.0 /usr/share/themes/alpha
mv /usr/share/themes/alpha/mediaplayer /opt/themes/alpha
ln -s /opt/themes/alpha/mediaplayer /usr/share/themes/alpha
mv /usr/share/themes/alpha/calendar /opt/themes/alpha
ln -s /opt/themes/alpha/calendar /usr/share/themes/alpha
mv /usr/share/themes/alpha/images /opt/themes/alpha
ln -s /opt/themes/alpha/images /usr/share/themes/alpha
mv /usr/share/themes/alpha/rtcom-messaging-ui /opt/themes/alpha
ln -s /opt/themes/alpha/rtcom-messaging-ui /usr/share/themes/alpha
mv /usr/share/themes/alpha/call-ui /opt/themes/alpha
ln -s /opt/themes/alpha/call-ui /usr/share/themes/alpha
mv /usr/share/themes/alpha/startup-wizard/opt/themes/alpha
ln -s /opt/themes/alpha/startup-wizard /usr/share/themes/alpha
mv /usr/share/themes/alpha/matchbox /opt/themes/alpha
ln -s /opt/themes/alpha/matchbox /usr/share/themes/alpha
mv /usr/share/themes/alpha/matchbox2 /opt/themes/alpha
ln -s /opt/themes/alpha/matchbox2 /usr/share/themes/alpha
mv /usr/share/themes/alpha/css /opt/themes/alpha
ln -s /opt/themes/alpha/css/usr/share/themes/alpha
It takes some time, but it´s worth.

If you delete the beta directory you save ~6MB, too.

I think there aren´t any downsites. You only move the files to another directory. You still can use the "Nokia Nseries" theme.

I moved the whole /usr/share/themes folder into /home/opt/themes2 and symlinked it.
No problems so far, and it's much faster than moving each folder manually.

Though I have been able to update the firmware to 3 but the roofts is almost full with only 35 mb free. I have uninstalled most of the apps but still no good. What to do. I have rootsh installed.

Suggest how to free the rootsh.

Hey, would you mind update http://wiki.maemo.org/Free_up_rootfs_space with this?

MohammadAG has a few ideas that should go on the rootfs wiki page about freeing ram. Used both his posted tricks and await his tutorial.

I disabled catalog extra testing and few other apps uninstall and was able to restore 60 mb. But this is very inconvenient hope there is a better way to keep installation and rootfs space eaters away.
