What is the difference between wifi switcher and simply go to settings and change to connection to "Always ask" or switch off "Switch to Wi-fi when available."?
Wifi-switcher unloads the module so I guess the Wifi antenna is completely turned off.

I'm aware of the battery issue....but having WiFi or 3G on (or off) doesn't make a huge difference.
However, whilst at work I switched on my AVAILABILITY (linked to facebook, skype and msm) and the battery life and indicatory LITERALLY drained from around 75% to empty in an hour. I wasn't even chatting to anyone, it was just online and AVAILABLE.
I do switch things off when not needed, but you buy an internet enabled phone and you expect to stay online for more than an hour or two without having to switch off what the phone/tablet was designed for in the first place!!

I managed to stay "Available" for a half day. I guess it sends and receives data all the time and the more services you are logged on to the more traffic is used.
just an update guys. turns out this wifi fix isnt that much of a fix. i managed to get 2-3 hours more with my standard usage of 3G, widgets and IM accounts without WIFI.

with 3G only, i would expect at least a day or more of use!
3G data drain on the battery is the same or greater then talk drain on the battery. You have about 180 minutes of talk time on a charge.
So, you have about 180 minutes of data use on a charge as well.
You're getting 14-15 hours w/3G only, so that's working out to on average 12-13 minutes per hour of data transfer, or roughly 20% duty cycle on the data network.
That's really not terrible. Not even a little terrible.
Turning off wifi improved battery life, but not significantly. I still could not get more than about 8 hours of battery life from the phone...and that was with light usage. Just sitting on the shelf the battery would plummet.
I had several IM services connected and based on info in these forums suspected they could be taking a heavy toll. I set my availability to "Offline" and power usage dropped substantially. I unplugged the phone last night and left it on the desk. After 8 hours of no use, it fell to somewhere just above 80%. I did a little email reading and looked a few web pages, and left it on the desk again. After 12 hours, it was only down to 80%.
For those interested, this is with dual mode (allow 2g or 3g, though I generally get 3g or 3.5 in the house), connected to exchange 2007 server for mail, and with the OM weather app using GPS and updating every hour.
I need to test this under other conditions, but generally I am leaning toward the conclusion that if I use this phone like a phone (meaning with without accessing heavy duty communications features) I can get phone-like battery time. If I have access to recharge, I can use the other comm features. If I know I will need all-day phone and email access without access to recharge (for example, when traveling) I can actually count on this gizmo.
If I find anything different under my regular workday conditions (which, admittedly, do not usually consist of heavy voice usage on most days) I will certainly report it. I would also like to hear of others' experiences.

The more connections you have (especially those that aren't suitable for long idle periods) will wake up the N900 more often (for a keepalive connection) causing more battery usage. I've found that when I stick to chat protocals that can tolerate a long idle period (e.g. gtalk) I can last around 8+ hours.
