I set up a hotmail account in the mail app and it could receive messages fine. When I create emails to send, they get stuck in the outbox, with a fail next to them.

I then deleted the hotmail account, and created a nokia messaging account, using my hotmail account as the email. Same problem...

The Incoming server and port are correct and outgoing server is correct, but the port number does not match what I see online. I changed it to both values, but neither works. Can someone screenshot their hotmail connections settings and post it for me?

I too have had problems setting up my Hotmail account. I can receive but not send mail. I kept getting a smtp failure message - something about making sure that my ISP had access to smtp.live.com. This was the default Hotmail smtp setting.

A colleague suggested I try changing it to send.vodafone.net since I'm with vodafone. I no longer get the error message but the emails still fail to send. They just sit in the Outbox with 'Failed' next to them.

In case this helps you jeweladdict, I deleted the Hotmail account that I created on my N900 and recreated it. I entered all the same info and left the defaults as they were.
This time it just worked, the way it should've in the first place. Here's the salient settings for my Windows Live Hotmail account - my mobile service provider is Vodafone...

Incoming Server* (POP3): pop3.live.com (this is greyed out)
Port: 995 (greyed out)
Outgoing Server (smtp): smtp.live.com
Secure connection: Normal (TLS)
Port: 587

Use connection-specific SMTP servers is unticked.

A separate issue that caused me problems was that I created a WLAN connection to a server at work. This server had recently had it's internet gateway removed without my knowledge. In my email settings I had a tick against 'use WLAN connection if available'. So after creating this invalid bogus WLAN connection I couldn't send OR receive email but the phone gave no message/error to indicate there was a problem. After deleting the no-good connection and recreating the account everything sorted itself out.

Hope this helps someone.

Br, Nick

i got mine to work through nokia messaging. Still have some problems sending sometimes (get failure note) but I can usually resend and have it pass. Worse case is I switch off wifi to Tmobile 3g and it works.
