I think a similar problem happened to me...This is what happened:
When I used Yahoo Mail IMAP settings with "smtp.mail.yahoo.com" on T-Mobile WiFi, it worked fine. And I assume that with T-Mobile WiFi, even "smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com" will work well.
Today morning, when I used Yahoo Mail IMAP settings with "smtp.mail.yahoo.com" on a regular WiFi connection (ie not provided by a telecom operator), it didn't work. Also, I tried "smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com" on a regular WiFi connection and it didn't work too!
So, I guess Yahoo Mail IMAP will work only on WiFi provided by a telecom operator OR GPRS / EDGE / 3G services provided by a telecom operator.
Please confirm my understanding!
This appears to be my experince. I tried the connection via my WiFi and an authorisation error was kicked back. Switch to cellular connection and everything works fine!
In case anyone is wondering I am using O2 cellular connection in the UK.
It is frustrating for me coz Yahoo Mail is my primary email. They are doing a terrible job - Giving IMAP access to BB, Iphone and selected WiFi telecom operators and not to anyone else!!
Not even to the premium user paying $20 per year! And Gmail gives IMAP access absolutely free!
I just got IMAP working on Yahoo and it works perfectly.
so even with wifi those other handsets can update?
i have no problems at all so long as i do not use wifi. so i just tap on the menu, then select the connection and select my tmo connection if i am at home or on wifi and then it updates...then 10 minutes later, my phone trys to search again for the fastest connection.
To summarise my experience:
Yahoo IMAP will work over GPRS with a standard client. (Not imaps, not wifi and not 3G).
Yahoo allow iphones and ipods to work because they support the wacky XYM proprietary Yahoo authentication.
There is a hack that allows imaps to work, which involves sending a custom string before the IMAP LOGIN command.
I have patched and compiled a version of mutt for the n900 and now have imaps access to Yahoo from any connection.
I tried to patch claws, but couldn't get it to work.

Hi Kenchy,
What do you mean by the word in bold below:
"Yahoo IMAP will work over GPRS with a standard client. (Not imaps, not wifi and not 3G)."
Sorry if i'm asking a stupid question but couldn't figure out what you meant by that!
Also, by your reply it seems like you have managed to access Yahoo Mail IMAP on N900 from any connection (WiFi or 3G). Can you help me with that? I need to access Yahoo Mail IMAP too!
