Okay - the internal works, so the server's okay. The DNS resolves correctly for the external address. That leaves either a problem with the forwarding/firewalling at the router, or your ISP (or mobile provider) blocking access. Can you check any logs to see whether the router is actually getting a connection from the N900?

ok is that the logs on the router? not sure what log on the phone i could check. appreciate your patience...i'm getting frustrated!!

Yes, on the router. The other thing to try is connecting from another external system (which'll rule out any router/ISP problems). If you can't easily check that and would like me to have a look, just PM me with the DNS name and port and I'll check that the VNC server can be reached.

ok i tried externally (even on a friend's n900) first by rdesktop and then by vnc and neither worked with the same error messages. thinking it was a fluke i've tried again with my laptop. only thing i haven't tried is my laptop at a member of my family's house. that will be my last ditch attempt to get this thing working...then i'll pm you!

I can connect to the server okay, but I get a "connection refused" when I try connect with a VNC viewer. Is this the same error you're getting? Can you make sure that encryption is set to "prefer on" on the VNC server.

ok encryption was set to always on but it's on prefer on now. what's the difference, out of curiosity?

The commercial RealVNC servers include encryption for the whole session. The encryption code hasn't been made available, so none of the open source clients can interoperate using this encryption. If you set it to "prefer on" then it will try to use encryption but will also allow access from viewers which don't support it.

This should allow you to connect from the N900 - I'm still getting a connection error here though, so you may need to restart the VNC server to get the settings to apply.
