I have not tried manually cloning to SD card yet, so in the mean time if anyone can confim that this works with penquinbait's SD boot installation of KDE, I would very much appreciate it. I supsect it works fine.

***

In my personal situation, I am using KDE on Nokia n800, based on the to SD card installation (not booting from SD) as explained here: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=14680 . I used the files for installing to mmc1 (the external SD slot). Its stated that it doesn't work on diablo but I am using DIABLO_5.2008.43-7 and KDE runs. However, I was unable to install the last part, file kdesup-3.5.8.deb. I don't know what that adds, but KDE runs without it.

to be more clear, I did attempt to install kdesup-3.5.8.deb. and although it fails to install, according to the application manager, it does give you the shortcut to KDE. the shortcut then works.

i am only assuming here, but if these KDE debs work on 43-7, excluding the kdesup-3.5.8.deb, its a shame it won't be fixed.

if not fixed, it would be awesome if penquinbait could explain if even its worth it to use KDE at all using this method, since kdesup doesn't install. and if its working enough to use, is there anything that we can add ourselves?

or if anyone could look at kdesup-3.5.8.deb and tell me whats in there?

I think the less dependent we are on an easy-install of KDE, the better it would be for everyone. if anyone could show us the long, complicated way of putting KDE or really anything worthwhile onto our IT, it would be very useful.

i'm sure there isn't anything a dot-deb could do that a linux newbie determined enough couldn't do.

i posted before asking if i'm unknowingly using a broken KDE, nobody either knows or haven't come across my question yet.

i'm no Linux expert, but it seems good, and in fact, with a battery meter i would be happy.

i attempted to use console-tools v1. maybe I'm just unlucky, but it doesn't seem to like my 7GB SD card. and I ended up having to re-flash my device because it somehow kept the file manager from starting.

Before trying installation, I suggest backing up anything on your SD cards you don't want to lose.

use this software if you need to reformat your cards if they become corrupted:

http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/

this only happens if you need to remove a card and your tablet complains that it is in use and theres no way to fix that even when shutting the device off

What I did was:

1. freshly flashed the OS
2. Nothing installed before using files and steps here:
http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=14680. including the last step, because even though the install fails, it gives you a shortcut to KDE.
3. If you can, before running KDE, create the biggest swap file you can in the control panel under memory.
4. fixed trash bin error
5. Under settings > control center > regional & accessibility > keyboard short cuts, bind move window to the hardware menu key. you can now move windows that are two large for the display.
6. Set up right click - do this, will save you a trip into insanity.
7. Removed unnecessary applets from the kicker (start menu/task bar)
8. under settings > desktop > panels I changed the size atribute to 32 pixels - who needs a giant kicker?
9. installed mplayer as smplayer is just a front end (gui) and doesn't work without mplayer.

You can change the theme, but i suggest doing it while not running any other programs and choosing the most simplistic theme of those that you prefer.

-TIPS-

[double click]
DO NOT "double click," everything is set to single click. (you may be able to set it to double click in settings) If you click something and nothing happens immediately, don't press it again, wait patiently for three seconds. Otherwise you will open multiple instantses of what you're trying to open and it might freeze your tablet.

[mplayer]
if you haven't already, isntall mplayer, penquinbaits installer doesn't do that work for you. I install from maemo.org under downloads > os2008 > multimedia.

----

[Trash bin error "directory already exists"]

As root, run

chown user.users /usr/share/mime/
chown user.users /usr/share/mime/Trash
^enter these using the red monitor icon (forgive my incorrect Linux terminology)

[unable to exit compact mode in smplayer]

in directory /home/usr/.qt
open smplayer config file (it will have pencil graphic in the icon)
once opened, scroll down to the section called "prefrences" and change:

compact_mode=true

to

compact_mode=false

save the file and exit Kwrite
