actually it is if your package doesn't have bugtracker link at all. Even if you get gazillion thumbs up, your package won't be promoted...

and at least I have commonly commented something about functionality etc and only broken bugtracker link being blocker.

Do the testers give the package maintainer any other feedback than thumbs up/down? What I mean is that do they file bugs against the application (I'd like to think so because the bug tracker link is so heavily enforced) or if the bug tracker link is missing do they send email to the package maintainer?

I'm just wondering how the testers let the developer know that the software is good or buggy in a more detailed way than giving thumbs up/down?

Is there some automated emails to the package maintainer after the package's quarantine time is over, etc for telling the status of the package going through the QA process?

You can leave messages on the package page, and anyone giving a thumbs down should definitely be doing so (unless the issue has already been pointed out by someone else). I don't bother leaving a message if I give a thumbs up though - there doesn't seem to be anything to add.

So basically there is no other feedback to the developer than the package page. That's what I wanted to know.

not quite, bugs are fed back through which ever bugs means the developer has chosen
testing feedback is by the testing feedback / package page and if there is a thread open it can be done on there too....

Just depends where the developer advertises to get feedback i suppose.

kinda like the package page - would like the list of packages (Link to) to be more prominent though.

Well, the developer gets direct mails from there, also if the app has a proper bugtracker the developer will receive bug reports/enhancements requests for sure.

Can i add a request that the page http://wiki.maemo.org/Bugs:Adding_Extra_products is possibly renamed but also a bit more prominent? - might be useful to add it as a footer to bugzilla if possible.

Also, it doesnt come up on the wiki when you search for bugs or bugzilla, that would also help
(Sorry not sure how to change it, or if i can?! )

So far the most common method was comments, especially in case of issues like bugtracker. That does not mean they can't or won't USE the bugtracker to create any further bug reports, but it's not a procedural requirement. In the case of more complex bugs, personally, I would expect either the reporter or the author to create a bug so progress could be followed. Again, no hard rules as we don't want to impose on how a developer deals with bugs, it's the bottom line that counts.

Based on some of the backlash I've seen on this topic (in various media), this is another "damned if you don't, damned if you do" activity... and I applaud the diligence of those working on a solution in the face of the opposition.

To detractors: some of you have complained about apps getting stuck in testing limbo, or immature apps getting out. Now the complaints are about efforts to resolve those dilemmas.

There is nothing malicious going on here. No one involved is trying to hamper the progress of application development. Indeed, the role of QA is to facilitate a robust, reliable process.

So by all means contribute (including constructive criticism), but please don't be so quick to assume the worst. Thanks all.
